Wild Scottish Clay ‘airidh’ incense burner..

These hand built items are made from a red, iron rich clay hand dug from a secluded woods in the Lammermuir hills, surrounded by bracken, moss, Scot’s pine trees and little burns (rivers) that have been known to contain gold.

This particular clay is gathered from the side of a small waterfall in a gulley not easily accessible by foot.

Note: There is also a new batch of Airidhs added to the shop from clay foraged in an area of some recent coastal erosion due to some very stormy seas. This area is high in lime and scattered with many interesting fossils. These particular airidhs are lighter in colour and have a lovely toasted fleck to them.

Each airidh will be slightly different, lighter or darker reds depending on iron content of the batch of clay, incorporating marks of the maker while constructing the walls and roof. The roof is left unglazed whilst the exterior walls are glazed with a matt white to give some extra strength to the piece.

The ‘airidh’ (Sheiling in Scottish Gaelic) is similar to a wee bothy or house used whilst out farming or hunting.
